Axel Legay (Moderator)

Professor – UC Louvain & Co-Lead Cyber Security WG – AI4Belgium

Axel Legay is Professor at UC Louvain. Additionally, he is co-leading the CyberSecurity Working Group at AI4Belgium. He also used to work at Inria as team leader cybersecurity. His main research interests are formal verification, testing, and cyber security. He is a founder and major contributor of statistical model checking (a statistical variant of model checking effectively used in industry), proveline (product lines analysis), and malware analysis. Axel wrote more than 300 publications and is a referee for top journals and conferences in those areas. He wrote several open-source tools and has been institution PI for more than 30 projects.

Melanie Rieback

Co-Founder & CEO – Radically Open Security

Dr. Melanie Rieback is CEO & Co-Founder of Radically Open Security (the world’s first not-for-profit computer security company) and “Post Growth” startup incubator Nonprofit Ventures. She is also a former Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Free University of Amsterdam.

She was named ‘Most Innovative IT Leader of the Netherlands’ by CIO Magazine (TIM Award) in 2017 and one of the ‘9 Most Innovative Women in the European Union’ (EU Women Innovators Prize) in 2019. She is also one of the 400 most successful women in the Netherlands by Viva Magazine (Viva400) in 2010 and 2017 and one of the fifty most inspiring women in tech (Inspiring Fifty Netherlands) in 2016, 2017, and 2019.

Melanie’s company, Radically Open Security, was named the 50th Most Innovative SME by the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (MKB Innovatie Top 100) in 2016.

Bart Preneel

Full Professor – KU Leuven & Co-Lead Cyber Security WG – AI4Belgium

Bart Preneel received an Electrical Engineering degree and Doctorate in Applied Sciences from the KU Leuven, Belgium. He is currently a full professor at the KU Leuven and heading the COSIC group. Besides, he is co-leading the Cyber Security Working Group at AI4Belgium. His main research interests are in cryptology, cybersecurity, and privacy. 

He has authored and co-authored more than 400 scientific publications. and is inventor of five patents. In 2014, Bart received the RSA Award for Excellence in the Field of Mathematics; in 2016, the Kristian Beckman Award from IFIP TC11; and in 2018, the ESORICS Award for Outstanding Research.

He is president of LSEC and has been president of the IACR (International Association for Cryptologic Research). He is a fellow of the IACR, a member of the Permanent Stakeholders group of ENISA (European Network and Information Security Agency), and the Academia Europaea. He frequently consults for the technology- and financial sectors and is involved with several start-ups in the area of e-security.

Rosanna T.S. Kurrer

Co-Founder & Managing Director – CyberWayFinder

Rosanna is an Architectural Engineer by training and holds a Masters Degree in Building Physics from Kyoto University in Japan. She runs a rapidly expanding European platform growing next-generation diverse cyber security professionals (www.cyberwayfinder.com). In December 2021, she became Belgian Cyber Security Personality of the Year.

She consults and leads design thinking, corporate innovation and coding seminars to corporates and individuals. An accomplished public speaker, Rosanna emphasises the importance of a growth mindset, as well as a bias to action approach, and radical collaboration.

Rosanna is also a certified MIT Master Trainer in Educational Mobile Computing, as well as EU Code Week ambassador.

She is a passionate design thinker and is trained to teach students, teachers and entrepreneurs the design thinking methodology, while building Android apps using the MIT App Inventor.
